💡 This is a template for note-taking during a shadowing session. You can use this to organize note-taking or to prompt your note-taking during the shadowing session. This template is particularly useful when you are shadowing together with another researcher. One person can be responsible for the filming while the other makes notes at the same time.

As you have seen in the research plan, there are 4 observations to make during the shadowing session; activities, interactions, details and locations. This template will help prompt your notes.
When using this template for making notes of your shadowing session, ensure that you use 1 template per user, as to not mix up users/information. Some frequently asked questions (FAQ) have been added to the bottom of this template.
Add the general information about the user here, such as their role, the date of the shadowing session and from what time till what time you recorded.

Activities are directly linked to what the user is doing while you are shadowing them. These are specific tasks they are doing, steps they take but also emotions experienced while doing these tasks.
Task | How is the user performing this task? | What does the user seem to feel/experience? |
---|---|---|
What is the task the user is doing / trying to complete? | Are they using a computer? Notes? A phone? How do they seem to use this? | Do they seem content? Or frustrated? If no emotions are visible to you, you can leave this empty |
example: the user is trying to order ice cream | the user uses a mobile phone to go to the webshop that lets them order ice cream. | |
they asked their friend what flavour ice cream they want. | The user seems overly excited about the prospect of having ice cream. | |
